Golden Boy from Kolkata, West bengal brings pride home
Umang jaiswal who hails from Kolkata scaled massive heights , thanks to the relentless support of his mom Late Mrs. Anuradha Jaiswal. Umang jaiswal, a state and national gold medalist made an impressive International debut by lifting approximately 590 kgs, hence fetching gold in men's junior Under-90kg category (drug tested division) in Asian Powerlifting championship held in Bangalore, India on 13th May, 2023.
From being obese to such an extend that physical activity was almost undoable for him to winning gold in Asian powerlifting championship, Umang's story is not at all a fairy tale. There was no fairy godmother or an Aladdin's lamp to provide this level of hard earned strength to the young Powerlifter. Only sheer hard work, dedication and his mother's love and support have made Umang such a competent lifter at the tender age of 21.
Umang's journey started back in 2015 when he was failing academically in class 8. The negativity at that teen stage of life of Umang pushed him to change himself as he said "I failed in school because I was not a good student, I was bullied by my seniors and classmates because of my obesity. I used to get taunts from my relatives because of all these issues I had in my life and all these negativity gave me nothing but the urge to hate myself more and more everyday but the only one person that never gave up on me was my mother Anuradha jaiswal. She supported and pushed me to become what I am today. I am in the fitness field for 8 years now and it all started because of my mom, she saw me going through the worst days of my life and now I am an Asian champion but the only thing I wish now is if i could just for the one last time hug my mother and show her what i am today. All this is for my mom, i know she is watching me from heaven, and i am gonna make her proud"
Unfortunately Umang's mom passed away in 2021 due to cancer but this didn't pulled Umang into darkness and instead this pushed Umang to work harder everyday because he believes that his mom is watching him from heaven and he is definitely making her mom proud.
